backlight behaves. on MOST hw i have seen backlight of 0 is actually just "very
dim" but on some it literally is "turn off entirely". there is no way to know
this without doing per-hardware integration work.

also by default keybindings are set up to control backlight, except you may not
have those keys that are already bound. you may have to bind new keys - but
what ones, i don't know - i dont have any macs.
