Have you tried Settings -> Files -> File Manager ->Hal and tick Mount 
volumes on insert?

Above works for me most of the time, occasionally I have unplug device 
then plug it in again.

Originally I had  Settings -> Files -> Places and Mount Volume on insert 
which didn't work for me, so I removed tick from that option.
