Hi there, yet another Christmas evening post from me. ;)
I am picking up a topic discussed months ago, already. Categories in the applications menu of e are not translated, while application names are. English: Applications > Office > Okular (Document Viewer) German: Anwendungen > Office > Okular (Dokumentenbetrachter) So we have: Applications --> Anwendungen (correct) Office --> Office (wrong, should be Büro or Büroanwendungen) Okular (Document Viewer) --> Okular (Dokumentenbetrachter) (correct) KDE and Xfce provide useful translations here, and so does Window Maker. Other, simpler window manages share the problem with e. When I brought up the topic a while ago, the reply was, that e doesn't do anything proprietary here, and just relies on system settings, and that this is assumed to be the correct way to do things. In principle I do agree, of course! However, e is already better in this respect than Xfce: When the user logs on for the first time, e asks for language and locale settings, while for Xfce a file needs to be edited --- inacceptable for an average user, who is not a developer or administrator. With correct translations of the categories in the applictions menu, e would have an almost perfect localisation, second only to KDE. What's so good about the way it's done in KDE? Control for locale and language of the user environment is completely up to the user. And it's possible to have default language (English), when I su to root, while everything else is in German. When I use a ~/.profile, as in Xfce, the su root environment becomes German, too, which I do not really want. Why? Because, when a command returns an error that I don't understand, it's much easier to find help on the web with the English error message, than it is with the German translation of the message. But this is, of course, only a "snag", and by no means a big deal. Just a little annoying, in an environment that does so much quite right.
