I've known xev for 30 years, that's what I had to use to make my custom
xmodmap files, the ones that we had some fun talking about when they
started breaking with X and E :)

xinput was really what I was missing here.

While we're at it, there is a basic volume widget in E, but is there
anything equivalent to pavucontrol?
Or is it kind of not useful given the volume sliders in the menu bar of
each app?
