did you try disabling the keymap stuff because there are incompatibilities
inside of xorg itself between xkb and core keyboard where xmodmap messes with
things. it could be e changing keymap and wiping out modmap changes internally
in x somewhere. i've also found having multilpe keymaps around makes thnigs
work weirdly if they are not consistent. e.g. if i disable capslock in 1 keymap
abut not in another, capslock still works all the time... no matter what keymap
is used.
