does sysfs actually report this? I have a thinkpad here and it doesn't do
anything like this (or i've never heard the plugging/unplugging sounds unless
i actually plug or unplug). i'd rather get to the bottom of this.
does /sys/class/power_supply/XXX (where XXX are the names of your AC and BAT
devices) actually mess up and sometimes report the power supply as not online?
(poke around and check the files)?

yes - elementary config - audio settings. theme makes the sounds. sounds come
under "virtual" channels like alert, input, etc. ... you can mute them.
