This is the mystery sound I've been hearing!  It's much less frequent since the 
barrel plug removal is mostly accidental, somewhat quiet, and there's no 
always-on-top visual clue something changes (my tray auto-hides).  I had been 
looking for rogue web browser windows as a source.

What is the sound supposed to be?  I would expect something more like the 
bzzzzt from sim city to be a power event with a different sweep down bzzt for 
unplugging.
