Greetings, Use something like IPerf to test the throughput: http://openmaniak.com/iperf.php.
You said he is complaining that his network is slow. Find out what exactly he is trying to do. Look over his shoulder when his network is "slow." It could be something simple like DNS hanging his web browser. If you are really concerned about the network, do the following. Put a test station behind his Linksys and load it up with IPerf. Put a second test station in the last subnet of your network where you hand your traffic off to someone or something you don't control. Run the throughput test between the nodes. If it looks good, you're network is good end to end. If it looks bad, you can move one of the nodes closer and closer until the performance jumps up. For a more permanent test solution, you can install NDT: http://ndt.anl.gov/ I installed a NDT machine at the POP for a small ISP I used to work for. The technicians would run their tests to that box in order to stress test the paths we were responsible for. It worked very well to diagnose problems quickly. The counters: Why are the counters so low for his port? Did you reset the counters recently? I recently installed my 1st C3 and one user is complaining that his internet is too slow. He has a Linksys router hanging off the port and several PC’s off this router running DHCP, (his subnet 1.1). I changed his port and he still says his network is slow. I brought my laptop and did a speed test from a port off his router and got 16mbps down and 4mbps up. I looked at his port (which is ge.1.2) on the C3 and it looks like what I pasted below. He says his network was much faster before we installed the Enterasys. He used to have DSL directly into his router. I pasted the only commands I know to test his port below. However, I tried the command “sh port cable ge.1.2”, and it says “not supported”. I don’t know why it says “not supported”. Does anyone know why his network might be slow on the Enterasys ?
