Ouch Tim! This hurts. I'll take a quick stab to get you started.

First, I don't trust Norton. I won't run it anymore or have it.
Here are a few apps I'd trust and choose:

Instead of Norton:
Tech Tool Pro - A version of this comes on your Mac disks with your Mac. And
there is an update to that per versiontracker.com. This is the fuller
version. Their site is <http://www.micromat.com/>.

TechTool Deluxe 2.5.6- for the version included with AppleCare Protection
Plan. Update - 05/29/2001

TechTool Pro 3.0.5-hardware/software diagnostic tool Update - 10/10/2001

Also to recover files:
Data Rescue - Shareware. you can try it free to recover one file, but see
your other files. <http://www.wildbits.com/rescue/>

And back to instead of Norton, Disk Warrior is also well respected.
<http://www.alsoft.com>

Oh... then: Dantz' Retrospect or Connectix CopyDoubler. (For backup)

Good luck.
