This "hack" was re-enabled with 10.1.2 (Radar #2774008 "Turn on Backing
Store Compression" in Build 5P43).  Although I don't know if the plist entry
is still required/used.

Of course, it's not really a "hack", it's just the way you enable the
functionality...

When you think about the relatively limited memory bandwidth on Macs, the
sheer number of "windows" under MacOS X (I often have 300+ Quartz windows
open), and the 10+-to-1 compression ratio, you quickly release what a good
thing this feature is.
