Thanks Paul, It looks like I'm fine so far after a simple rebuild. I really like the database features of Entourage, but the stakes are high when it goes bad... And it really is a pain to backup, as mine is now above the 650 MB of the CDs I use to backup.
And I just remember Allen had a script to count messages. Next time (if there is ever one) I'll use that before the rebuilt, as I kinda rely on my archived mail to stay archive where it is. FYI, I had sent a couple messages with attachements between 5 and 10 MB just prior to the "incident" and at least one was rejected by the SMTP server as it was being sent and gave me an error message in Entourage. Since I a) never had any problems with my DB before and b) never got that error message either, it might be somehow related. I also dragged and dropped encoded attachement from saved drafts between messages around the same time, another task I don�t do too often.
