I can. Use Access, that is. If you read the next couple of lines you'll see
what we're talking about ;)

Anyway. Point I want to make is based on what's happening at my work
(danger: anecdotal evidence from n=1). We're a training company drifting
towards being a development company, largely because the market is
shrinking. We're providing a lot more training for Access and Project now
whereas Word and generic "Getting Started" training is trailing off. IOW,
the demand is for the more technical, focused apps. There is, I believe, a
generational change underway and I think Apple is reading it correctly. Most
people who are likely to use a computer in the future are being exposed to
one from an early age and things such as basic word processing are becoming
commonplace and learnt at home. Given that there are a number of fairly
weighty competitors in the market place for database solutions and their
ilk, far better to focus on household utilities. After all, not everyone
uses a computer at work but many have a fridge at home. Those that have
electricity, anyway. Even looked at globally those people are a significant
minority.
BTW, on another tangent. Plenty of Mac users use FileMaker; the product
category is not an issue. The reason you wont see Access for Mac is because
there's too much custom code in there. Written to the metal, as it were.
