Well it "works" as far as I am concerned. I don't need to see the ligatures
or a blank/wrong character. I think replacing it with the correct
(non-ligature) characters is good.
(BTW, when replying to Eric's message the fi and fl automatically returned
to ligatures, even though the received message did not display it.)
