You say you "can't rebuild from inside Entourage..." - do you mean you can't
rebuild by holding down option key when starting entourage? If you do this,
do you get the dialog that asks what sort of rebuild you want to do? Or does
E crash/freeze before that? If so, it is probably something more deep seated
than the database.

If you don't get as far as that I'd try moving the Microsoft folder out of
the preferences folder and restarting - it may be that something is
corrupted there. Another likely problem is a corrupt font - move all but the
most basic out of the fonts folder - especially any that are used for
display in Entourage (I'm not sure what the defaults were for E2001,
probably verdana, Geneva and maybe courier or palatino)

If you are getting as far as starting the rebuild but having it crash on you
part way through, restart with all extensions off, give Entourage the
maximum possible memory available and try again. You will also need to have
at least twice as much free space on your disk as the size of your Entourage
database.
