In the cases I've seen, Retrospect complains (in the log--and to the user
via it's popup window) that there were 'execution errors', but it seems to
otherwise backup everything else and even verify it.

I guess it just skips files that have changed between the start and the
actual backup and gets on with backing-up everything else.
