Isn't this rather a case of the sympthomology indicating that the original approach is rather badly borken and should be take out back and shot in preparation for a complete refactoring of that function? :-) Seems to me I've seen this complaint for a very long time now, and always with vague and very odd descriptions of what exactly will cause it.
