I agree with Diane. Under view check 'Threaded' and 'Preview Pane'. I then use the arrow keys to scan down the messages, reading the first in the thread. If a thread interests me I hit the right arrow key to open the thread, then continue scanning down the messages using the down arrow key. The only extra step is when I want to delete all the messages I have to go to View>Expand All, then I cmd-a to select all and then delete. If you don't expand all then you have to do multiple (sometimes many multiple) hits of the delete key before they are all gone.
