Because with a format flowed message being displayed there is no hard
wrapping. If you alter the window width the paragraphs will re-wrap,
spoiling any embedded quote characters.

This is why Eudora uses a black sidebar to indicate levels of quotation and
Entourage uses indentation in an HTML message.
