Why not use an automatic archiving program, like eMessage Archiver (see URL
below)? You get the email all into reliable FileMaker databases (you do not
need FileMaker for eMA), and can use all FMP's search, sort, etc. abilities.

You can specify which folders go into which FMP database, to create
topic-oriented databases. Also how old, what status, priority, etc.

If any email is larger than 60 KB, it is automatically separated into
multiple parts. And you can still Reply, etc. to them from the database.
The originals are automatically disposed of (deleted or moved) as they are
archived.

No, though I wouldn't suggest doing it more than necessary. It will make
Entourage go lots faster, especially if you have deleted lots of mail. If
you archive regularly, the deleted mail's space is automatically re-used by
Entourage, making rebuilds needed less often.

I think the database limit is dependent on version: the latest OS X version
has a larger limit, I think 2 GB. Others here might chime in here to give
more info. If you have 2001, be sure to get all updates, which make 1 GB at
least safe.

By all means if you archive them out of Entourage into a readily accessible
form, delete them (at least the older ones) from Entourage. It will make
backups of still active mail in Entourage much easier.
