Sorry I'm a little late to this thread, but I have gotten behind. Anyway
after reading this thread and the prior one or two on the same topic, I was
wondering if something like the paradigm used for fonts in the other office
products would meet most peoples needs. That is:

A text box with the name of the folder that the message is currently in
followed by a disclosure arrow in the tool bar. When the arrow is pressed it
would drop down a list (a hierarchical list) of folders with the last n
(small number like 5 or set by preference) that have been selected at the
top, above a bar. Both the recently used and the hierarchy list would be in
alphabetical order. Of course the current folder would be in the recently
used list and have a check mark by it. I guess for completeness the current
folder name in the hierarchical list should also have a check mark next to
it.

This same paradigm could be used in the browser views (folder, mail view, or
search list). The folder location of the highlighted message would be shown
(important in the mail view and search list). Scrolling through the list of
messages would not permanently add each folder to the recently used list.
When the disclosure arrow is pressed, the last "move to location" in the
recently used list would be highlighted. This preserves the current
capability to sequentially 'select messages and quickly move them to the
same folder'.

My 2 cents worth,
