I think there's a pref for how long it takes for a message to be marked as
"read" - yes, there is - it's in Mail and News Prefs. Have you tried setting
that to less time?

I don't experience this behavior. If I click the trash can for one message
and then click again, the next one goes away.

You can click on the "hide folders" arrow to make the list of folders
disappear, is that what you mean?
