I am NOT prepared to wreck my computer in order to do a Clean??? Install, which has NOT so far been explained to me how to, in order to maybe get scripts working or Not It is a chance I am NOT prepared to take at present until I know more about what is involved in the clean install.
(trying to take some heat out of this)
There is no reason why a clean system install would 'wreck your computer', quite the opposite, from what has been described it is apparent that something is already broken in there (software-wise), which is why simple applescript commands are giving you errors. Yes, after such an install you would undoubtedly have to re-install some things (like the Palm Desktop software and a variety of other utilities you may be running), and several other items would require re-configuration. For this reason, clean installs do tend to be quite a serious issue, but there is no real reason to fear them.
As to the mechanics of 'how', that is easy enough. Just insert your Jaguar disk, and reboot with the 'C' key held down. The installer will run and you will be prompted (at the appropriate point) as to which sort of install you want to do (overwrite, archive or clean). An archive install may be better for you, this will preserve a COPY of all you old system files, so that when you are happy that the new system is running OK, you can start to copy back some of your preference files instead of setting stuff up from scratch again.
I'm sure I don't really need to reiterate the 'standard instructions', but here they are anyway...
Remember to back up all you r critical data before undertaking any sort of system maintenance. Problems are rare, but they do happen. If you don't back up and you lose data you have only yourself to blame!
