I notice the same with any email that is larger than 20K or so. It gets
worse the larger the email. I posted about it before, with messages that
were a few hundred k in size, and was more or less told those emails were
huge. I kind of disagree, they are plain text after all, any text editor
handles them fine. I also keep a close eye on other email apps, Eudora,
Mail, and Guyaz do not have this issue, though they are a little more
lightweight than Entourage. Still, Entourage has the features I want, so I
stick with it, even though it is getting to be a dog performance wise.

I run a dual 2.0 G5, 2Gigs of ram. Entourage plays no better nor worse for
me on a single CPU 1.8, to be honest, I did not notice any performance
increase when moving from my old G5 800 to the G5 dual. I think I could
throw a dual 8Ghz at it and it would still be the same. Playing with a dual
2.5 at the Apple Store, I could not tell a difference at all.

When I am typing a email and the pop check schedule kicks in, I can usually
get three to five words ahead of Entourage as the pop checking slows the
whole app down. IMHO, Entourage needs a little time where the devs do
nothing but performance tuning. Then again, I want Apple to do the same for
a year with OS X :-) However, you can not sell performance tuning, so it
gets a back seat.

I am hoping over the next year, and with 10.4, there are some things that
help the Mac BU work on these issues. Reading a email, checking email etc
should not pop my CPU's up to 50% usage, this is email :-)
