Subject: [ENTS] request for tree ID help

ENTS,

I'm requesting some help identifying this tree that I found the other day.
It was growing near the Landing Creek in Egg Harbor City (NJ). This creek
flows generally northward into the Mullica River. This is one of those
wetland areas that started out as a cedar swamp and grew back as a hardwood
swamp after one or more cuts.

My first thought was Shagbark Hickory, but that isn't supposed to exist
here.

Unfortunately I don't have any clues other than what you see in the picture.
I didn't take notice of any leaves on the ground below it.

I can't imagine what it could be. It must be some sort of non-native
species.

Any ideas? The shaggy bark has be stumped.

Thanks,
Barry</table
