Ed, I can easily see why you chose this route to update the ENTS website. It is much easier and less time consuming than the old way. One thing concerns me though. That is the perminence of the data. How long does the data remain on the ENTStrees Google discussion list? If you are linked to a page and it has been deleted from the list it is gone. Does older posts ever get cleared or deleted after a certain period of time? Doing it the old way almost certainly garantees a more certain retention of data. And since it is both on the ENTStrees list and ENTS website it is backed up.
I am not trying to downgrade your changed method. As long as Google is reliable at permanent storage of our data there is no problem. But ENTS is no better than it's data. Just imagine if we somehow lost important data as the Tsuga Search Project, the Riddle Tuliptree or the Live Oak Project? Once again, no criticism. Just something to think about.
