ENTS--

There is still a concerted effort being undertaken in Arkansas to definitively
locate ivory-billed woodpeckers, and sightings are still being reported in some
locations.? I try to keep my eyes peeled whenever I'm traveling in appropriate
bottomland hardwood habitat, but so far, no such luck.

I have found myself much more aware of woodpeckers over the last 4 years or so,
and I have seen a lot of pileated woodpeckers, both flying and scaling trees.?
My experiences with pileateds lead me to believe those knowledgeable observers
more now than in the past--while pileateds and ivory-bills are somewhat
similar, their differences would be apparent to a trained eye almost
immediately.

George;
My sons and saw either an Ivory Bill or a Pileated woodpecker pair
that were nesting in a hollow Sycamore on Lewis Creek
in the Cumberland River Gorge nr. Burkesville KY in 2003. We reported
the sighting to UK but got mostly naysayers, who never
even showed to look. The pair moved when a Levee building project
earth moving got too close to the tree. Ever time we tried to sneak up
on them to take a photo
they'd retire. Shy birds but very noisy when they thought they were
alone. We've wondered ever since which specie they were. Many River
gorge areas have lots of wildlife that use the corridor as a refuge
from human activity on the plateau or Mountains around them.
