1. NATURAL DISASTERS

During the week, smoke haze-blamed on forest and peat fires and farm
clearings in Kalimantan and Sumatra-covered wide areas in northern Sumatra,
West and Central Kalimantan, Singapore Island, the Malaysian part of Borneo,
and southern Thailand, disrupting airport activities and sea transportation,
and causing eye irritations and breathing problems. Visibility in some areas
was reduced to less than 100 meters. A West Kalimantan official said
Wednesday the administration distributed thousands of facemasks to residents.
Minister of Forestry Marzuki Usman said Tuesday the government, owing to
severe lack of capacity, had yet to formulate a programme to remedy the
situation. Director General of forest preservation and natural conservation
Wahjudi Wardojo said there were 36 hot spots in West Kalimantan and 10 in
East Kalimantan. There were 117 hot spots in North Sumatra and 112 spots in
Riau, as well as 53 in West Sumatra. Last month, there were only three hot
spots detected in North Sumatra. The Malaysian Government has banned open
burning for the next three months in recognition of rising health concerns.
Authorities in Singapore are monitoring air pollution levels. Later news
reports from Malaysia and Thailand indicated that the air had cleared by
Thursday. (*)
