I predict that within three to four years Canon will have 10 to 12 mega
pixel EOS cameras. They will have specially designed lenses for it that will
also be EOS compatible. The lenses will be corrected for optimum digital
capture. Prices will be reasonable and these chip will be integrated in to
the EOS line up. So we will have 10mp or 12mp sensors in each camera
throughout the line. There will be only three camera in this line; basic,
advanced and finally the Pro model.
In the p/s category I will guess that 4.5mp cameras will become an industry
standard. Most people never get there pictures enlarged beyond 8x10 anyhow
so these will be perfect. If we want larger, the 4.5mp should do it nicely
and using Genuine Fractals we will have no problem. We can get more pictures
on a card if we cut resolution in half. Still plenty for snapshots and
enlargements.
In three to four years 35mm sales will drop dramatically and continue to
head off into oblivion. The prices for digital cameras will keep coming down
and will match their film cousins. Well, what about the people who don't own
a computer? Simple they bring in their card to a photofinisher and get
pictures from it just like they would do with a roll of film. I run a 1 hour
photolab and we are getting this equipment soon. In three to four years most
places should have this upgrade.
When Canon brought out the EOS they said they would be future compatible and
they have not let us down. I am still waiting to hear (any day now) that
there will be a 6mp EOS
for us.
