Terry,

This depends on your needs.  I have read the other responses so-far and
agree with both Bob and Shashvat.

I have two tripods.  My travel tripod is basic, made of aluminium is about 4
foot fully extended and collapses to just under 1 foot and fits nicely in my
Camera Back Pack.  It's a "SLIK Compact".

My other tripod for minimal travel is very heavy, opens fully to about 6ft.
It's very stable and useful.  It's a "Cullman".  I bought my travel tripod
after my first and last experience lugging the Cullman around overseas.

It's a case of Horses for Courses.
