3.6 lbs. is heavy for a Carbon Fiber.  Check out the Slik Pro 804CF tripod, 
it weighs only 2.6 lbs, same as the Gitzo Mountaineer Mk II.  
Then add a Velbon PH-263 magnesium ballhead which is 3.8 inches high, 
and weighs only 9.6 ounces.  This head is lighter than the Gitzo heads 
and very well made.  Total weight for the combo is less than your Bogen 3444
alone.
