When I do manage to go backpacking, my backpack (K2 Longbed) always seems to be
full before I get to *any* photo gear. Perhaps this is because these trips
always seem to occur in a cold-weather season. . . .

Well, yes. That's why I make the distinction between trips were photography is
the primary goal and those where it isn't.

In my case, that was a one-time occurance, unlikely to ever be repeated.

Sierra Designs tent, Marmot and Western Mountaineering bags, K2/Dana backpacks.

These days, a few flat miles with 40 lbs. (18kg) would probably kill me.
Nonetheless, the problem is space, not weight.
