Sound advice! This is what I have in mind when I reply to folks asking what
lens(es) to buy by suggesting that they at least consider fixed-focal-length
lenses instead of automatically going for some zoom or other. And in this same
spirit, I would point out that the quality requirements are significantly lower
for print reproduction than for photographic enlargement (although you may need
the quality on the lightbox to make the sale). In other words, a lens that is
sufficiently sharp and distortion-free to produce an acceptable image for
magazine reproduction may not make the grade if someone wants to make 16x20-inch
enlargements from their 35mm negatives or slides. (Please note that I say "may
not," rather than "will not.")
