I bought my CANON 28-70 f2.8L. It's the sharpest and fastest (focusing) --
not to mention it's got full-time manual focusing (FTM). Unfortunately,
it's probably the most expensive one. I got mine for $900. Here's my
opinion on your list of lenses:
28-135 IS: too slow...especially at the 135 end (f5.6)
Sigma: it has FTM, but not as well constructed as the Canon
Tamron: WAY too big (82mm filter size!!). Badly constructed, too (my friend
dropped one and we opened it up, it was all plastic...).

Maybe I'm too big of a Canon fan. But whenever I needed to trust my Canon
lenses, they've never failed.

I think the 28-135IS is pretty fast. And the Tamron badly constructed? Your
friend must have dropped that lens pretty far. The Tamron SPs are metal and
plastic much like the L lens from Canon. Perhaps you are getting it
confused with a lower priced Tamron lens.

I too am a Canon fan, but when a inexpensive lens can do well I state that.
Granted the 28-70 is excellent, but others can do well too even if they are
not made by Canon.
