Does this mean that closest focus at 400mm is 1.569 meters with the 12mm 
extension and 1.393 meters with the 25mm extension?

I would have liked to be able to focus to something like 1 meter... when 
taking pictures of small birds, for example. But maybe 1.393 meters is good 
enough. I will have to try.

Should I get the Canon extension tubes, or are other brands (Tokina, 
etc...) as good?

Is there similar info somewhere about the 500D lens?

Your calculator looks impressive, but are there instructions for its use?
