As others have noted, the purpose of using flash in Tv or Av mode is have the
flash balanced with the ambient light. If you want the traditional
bright-subject/black background look, use one of the auto modes (P or �Green�).
I think most folks will find flash in Av or Tv mode most useful as a fill-flash
(especially with a built-in flash, which at full power will remove any sense of
3D from the photo); in my own experience setting the flash compensation to -1
works very well for adding some extra light to the scene without making it
obvious that flash was used (as a matter of subjective personal taste, I
generally don't care for photos in which I can tell a flash was used, unless it
is for a deliberate effect, such as a hair-light).
