Hi folks -

I thought I'd post this just in case anyone in the groups is
interested. And look, I *know* the 75-300 is not a bloody "L" lens!
(wink) I'm posting this for those of us working with, or considering
working with, the less expensive long lens. I have posted 4 shots to
the Elan 7e files area taken with the following:

I just bought a Tamron 1.4x TC on eBay, not even the SP one, it's the
one that says "C-AF 1 MC4" on the side. I had some trepidation
because of reports I'd read on these lists about losing AF with a slow
lens, not reporting aperture etc. I just shot my first two rolls
(one Superia 400, one Superia 800) through it and the EF 75-300 4-5.6
III USM, of egrets and night herons down at Oakland's Lake Merritt.
(The US's historical first wildlife preserve, in the center of busy
downtown! Complete with Egret rookery, and all the Pacific flyway
regulars)

I just want to report that, at least on the Elan 7, it autofocuses
just fine, and aperture reporting is normal. There was no blatant
under- or over- exposure on either roll, except where I intentionally
bracketed. Or forgot to remove compensation! Autofocus on the 75-300
tends to be slightly "hunty" anyway, and this is slightly increased
with the TC. Usually one excursion and then lock, although often it
locks right up. If there is a strong color demarcation, then AF is
much more sure.

Judging from this first experiment, exposure is more critical, even
with print film. Over-brackets lost contrast and were quite prone to
flare. Under-brackets seem more generous. Bokeh is a little weird,
so composition/background and shutter/aperture needs to be chosen
carefully. (Have a look at "Black-Crowned Night Heron Fishing.JPG" -
the moving water created a starnge effect at this slow shutter
speed.)

Four photos posted in the file area of the Elan 7e group:
