Dan,

No, this isn't a double exposure type of idea.  

DOF preview seems to satisfy the majority of people,
but DOF preview is in itself isn't 100% accurate. 
Additionally, DOF preview doesn't help much if you
want to capture the shot with the aperture wide open
anyway.

The whole concept with focus bracketing is that you
ensure within a couple frames or so, that you captured
exactly what you intended to get in focus.  Very much
like the concept of exposure bracketing.  Of course,
focus bracketing would be more useful at the larger
apertures, and not so much when you intend to shoot
closed down anyway.

I do agree with Julian (and WJM?) that it would seem
the best way to offset the focus correctly with IR
film is to program it into the electronics of the
camera/body system.  And if the focus offset is
already known, as it appears to be since all my lenses
have these IR markings, then why not simply make it a
custom function setting or mode?  Hello Canon - you
