Looking at your pictures I notice that image #0074 appears to be the darkest
background. I would suggest that the closeness of the subect along with the
bright shirt influenced the camera setting into thinking that there was
enough light and therefore did not expose the background. Look at the other
pictures and you notice that the subjects are further away and the reflected
light back to the camera would have fallen off there by changing the camera
setting to something with a slower shutter speed or larger aperature. AT
least this is how I interpet things. Remember if you have a slower shutter
speed it will allow for more exposure of the background as it allows more
light to hit the film for a longer period of time.
I often shoot at 1/30 or 1/45 at events inside to get more background
exposure. Sometimes with movement blur but that adds to the picture by
showing the movement of the subject.
Also what may have happened is the flash batteries were not up to full
charge or were getting weak..
