Many good advices already. My initial thought is the P mode. It limits
your shutter speed, thus you might end up with underexposed background.
Try to see what the P mode gives you for shutterspeed without flash in the
similar situation. If it's far less than 1/60, you'll get underexposed
background. 1/60 is the slowest P mode will use with flash if I remember
correctly. Best way to cure this is to switch to M mode, set the largest
aperture and some comfortable shutter speed (depending on your stability,
focal length, the effect you are after and everything...), for instance
1/20. You might also like to set the second curtain sync on - but be avare
that then the pre-flash comes more separately from the main flash and that
can cause your subject to close eyes...
E-TTL works just fine on EOS 50e. Just remember to use the
correct focusing point as the exposure is based on the used focusing
point. If you use manual, then I think it reverts to using either just the
middle point or all the points for flash exposure. In both cases it's not
as accurate as using specific af point.
