A 3x TC cuts a LOT of light (3 stops!). So, unless
you start with an f/2 or f/2.8 lens, you'll loose
autofocus. The 85/1.8 with 3x TC would become a
255/5.0, The 70-200/4 (I think somebody mentioned this
lens earlier in this thread) would become a 210-600/11.
Also, unless your "primary" lens is extremely sharp
to begin with, the image created by the lens/3x TC
combo will be soft to some degree - even if the TC was
100% perfect (which it isn't). Every softness in your
"primary" lens will be magnified 3x.
The best thing to be said about this TC is probably that
it is better to have a soft photograph than none at all.
