I tested the centre AF point on the focussing screen tonight and it seems to 
be working reliably again.  Very strange, coz I've not done anything to the 
camera - same batteries and all.

Thanks for your help!  It's set my camera straight!  :)

     I've never encountered such problem with my EOS30 (finger touching
wooden desk).  It seems that the centre AF sensor on your camera isn't happy 
and decided to go on strike.  Have you checked the focusing screen inside of 
the mirror compartment?  Is there any dust/dirt there?  Is the mirror clean 
in the centre too?  How about changing to a new set of batteries?
