Comparing the focus speed of the 28-105 USM and the 50mm 1.8 isn't really an apples to 
apples kind of comparison.  A fixed focal length lens will generally focus faster than 
a zoom, the shorter the focal length, the faster it will probably focus.  Compare the 
focus speed of the 28-105 to that of your 35-80. It is hard for me to say 
definitively, since the only non USM lens I have is the 50mm 1.8, but you should see a 
marked difference.

You have a good point there.  I should first note that I have always found my 75-300 
(USM) to be very slow in achieving focus.  But I also compared the 28-105 to the 35-80 
in focus speed.  The difference is very slight.  Maybe the 28-105 is faster, but 
certainly not a great difference.  The 28-105 is definitely quieter, though.

Also note that I haven't done any comparisons using AF Servo mode, only one-shot.
