I agree... but what about if you are carefull in moving the D30 parallel to
the painting and take many smaller photos which you would then stitch in
some specialized software (not manually in Photoshop) to form a larger image
of the whole painting. As he'd be working in digital this is much easier
than with film based systems. Just use the camera in fully manual settings
(so that nothing changes between the images), and perhaps it's better to
move the camera and not the painting as then the illumination of the
painting will be consistent. Of course in terms of moving the camera in
parallel to the painting, it might be easier to slide the painting against
something. But then you might really end up with lighting problems. Anyways,
this is something that is so easy to do (with digital camera) that it should
be tried before trying to get hold of a large format digital camera (which
might not be easy!)
