It's true that you need to put some effort into doing that. But not when
taking the photo. All you need to do is have everything in manual (exposure,
white balance), make sure the lighting doesn't change, and make sure you
move the camera in controlled fashion (keeping the same distance and focal
length obviously). This isn't much more than traditionally. And...

And one should not try to do the stiching manually in PhotoShop. Just scan
the net for programs for creating panoramic images. Even the software for
Canon Digital Ixus could do this (definitely not the best, but it has modes
for both normal panoramic and images where camera has been moved parallel to
the scene.) With a (good) program (doesn't have to be the best even) the
initial setup and crude positioning can be done quite quickly and if one has
a slow computer, he/she could set it to do the composition over night. And
better panoramic software does this much better than one could do manually
in PS.

If one is not a pro and doesn't do lots of these, but just a few...
definitely worth the try! If one is a pro and does tens, hundreds or
thousands of these, then obviously not.
