I too have used an EOS-1 in some occasions before I got EOS-3. At that time,
my main camera was EOS-50e, and I too didn't see much difference in AF
between them. Definitely the EOS-1 wasn't any better really. But then again,
I might not have used them in such dark conditions.
Additional point about the one AF point... If you look at the manual of your
EOS-50 (Elan II), there should be an explanation of the TTL flash zones. It
has 4 zones, of which always 2 are selected for flash exposure. Which two?
That depends on the selected AF point. Now, since TTL (and A-TTL, which I
would never use when photographing weddings) metering happens only during
the taking of the photograph, the subject that you are exposing for needs to
be under those flash zones. Now, taking this to EOS-1... which I'm not sure
of... might mean that with that camera you need to have the AF point always
over your subject to get proper flash exposure.
With E-TTL capable camera, you can pre-measure the flash (with FEL), and
more over, the flash exposure is linked to the active AF point.

True, but what is visible on the LCD is still quite familiar.
But if you have a good deal on some body, that should be considered also.
With lots of money one could buy the EOS-1V and get it all, but not all of
us have this kind of money :-(
Anyways, these are just my opinions too. Good luck with the decision.
Best regards,
Hugo.
