Hi Tom and Michael,

My Canon 430EZ Speedlite functions in A-TTL mode on my Elan 7E.
At least the full-auto A-TTL works, but the distance-warning
function does not (just like on every EOS body since the EOS
630).

You're not missing much with A-TTL.  It can be "simulated"
with the FEL flash metering function in E-TTL. Push FEL to
activate pre-flash metering in M mode with the shutter set
to between 1/60 and 1/125. You have 16 seconds to find the
narrowest aperture where the flash ready symbol changes
from blinking to steady.
