Yes...
The furthest I've got is taking two photos from slightly different positions by
shifting my weight from left to right legs.  As you say, it works very well, but
my technique is limited to very static subjects.  (I've also tried using a
tripod but that's even more limiting, unless you need bags of DoF.)
I recall an article in the British Journal of Photography some years ago where
the writer siamesed two Minolta X-300s together, with layshafts linking the
controls of the two 35-70 zoom lenses together.  I just wish the very few new
cameras weren't of such dodgy parentage and exposure control sophistication!

I've got two matched Carousel projectors with polar filters etc., silver screen
and also a small collection of viewers.
I've attended quite a few meetings of the 3D / Stereo Society in the UK, and
fairly often it all comes together, and as you say the results can be quite
spectacular.
Have you tried viewing any of the 3D on the web?  Some of it is very good.
