Howard, you'll get the best results if you buy a flash meter. That way you won't worry how to set ratios and stuff. You can use as many flashes as you want, put them in optical slave mode and set them to manual. With flash meter, you can also use studio flashes or whatever and get precisely what you want.
As for 550EX, it can do everything, including only controlling other flashes via wireless ETTL. The flash meter is also the cheapest solution. IMHO, E-TTL and other high tech stuff implemented in flashes are convenient if you do not have time and want to get the best possible results in a changing environment (evaluating light and flash exposure when you press the shutter release). Where the environment is steady, the flash meter is the way to go, and is more hassle free. :) Just my $.02. Best regards, Miha. -----Original Message----- I have an Elan 7 and a 420EX flash. I am interested in possibly using multiple flashes for macro and some portraiture (currently using off camera shoe cord 2). In the best of all possible worlds I would want to be able to vary flash intensities to the different flashes as well as having FEC. Is my best bet an ST-E2 and another 420EX, ST-E2 and 550EX, or just add a 550EX and use it as a master (I asssume you can run it as a master while using it to also fire a slave flash off camera..is that true)? Will the ST-E2 allow two 420EX's to vary flash output on different channels? Since the FEC for the 420EX is via the camera body would the slave 420 lose that ability? * **** ******* *********************************************************** * For list instructions, including unsubscribe, see: * http://www.a1.nl/phomepag/markerink/eos_list.htm ***********************************************************
