Sorry, no experience on optical slave sensors with 550EX but I assume it is like other Canon flashes. With most (?) sensors it fires once but no more unless you do some tricks (like manually fire the flash from the test button and/or dis/reconnect the slave etc.). Thus not very practical. Keeping that in mind, if you try some in the store and find a working one please tell us too. I have used the older Canon T299 with a cable to trigger other slaves.
