Hi Rod,
I think filter quality should match the lens quality. I have both of the
same "L" class lenses you are inquiring about and using the best multicoated
UV filters are cheap insurance. If these were lesser lenses I'd recommend
lesser filters if cost was an issue but you can't have too good a filter in
front of your lenses.
Filters help to protect the front lens element and protect the filter
threads of the lens barrel from impacts and contamination that can damage
lens coatings. I use them for many of the same reasons I always use a lens
hood, in addition to being functional by reducing UV and internal
reflections like the correct hood does. Long ago B+W were the best for this
purpose but last year after looking at the newest Hoya SuperMultiCoated
filter line coated on BOTH sides with 12 coats of anti-reflective materials
I have switched to the SMC's. While B+W clearly has a superior glass and
the rings are made of brass to prevent sticking the real trick with anything
you put in front of your lens is to minimize any additional flare and
internal reflections, here the SMC's are much better in practical use.
Regards,
Chip Louie
